There are different types of coloured contact lenses: enhancement tints and opaque colour tints. Many of these coloured contact lenses are available in plano form (without visual correction), as well as in designs for people who need astigmatic or bifocal type correction. Coloured contact lenses are available in disposable or conventional lens.
An enhancement tint is a solid (but translucent) tint. It enhances the existing colour rather than change the colour of your eyes. These type of lenses may be worn to make the eye colour more intense or to illuminate the eye colour.
Colour tints are opaque tints which dramatically change your eye colour. They are usually made of patterns of solid colours. Even the darkest eyes can undergo a bold or a natural colour change. Colour contacts come in a wide variety of colours, including blue, green, honey, hazel, gray, amethyst, brown and turquiose.
Crazy Colour Contact Lenses
Costume or theatrical lenses also fall into the category of opaque color contact lenses. Long used in the movies for special eye effects, these lenses are now widely available for novelty use and can temporarily transform the wearer into an alien or cheetah, among others.
Do You Need a Prescription for Coloured Contact Lenses?
Absolutely. Coloured contact lenses are medical devices and are fitted to the specifications of each individual's eyes, even if there is no prescription put into the contact lenses. Colour contacts, like clear contact lenses, must be properly cleaned and disinfected with appropriate cleaning products.
