At Urban Eyewear, we combine highly skilled professionals with state-of-the-art optical technology. We continually strive to provide patients with the best diagnostic care available.
New Corneal measurement Technology
We now have available corneal mapping technology. Computerised corneal topography is a three dimensional imaging process used to map the surface power of the cornea. The data points gathered are then digitised and analysed by sophisticated computer software. The result is a detailed map of the corneal curvature much like a topographical map of land.

With this information the optometrist is able to design soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses with curvature changes every 10 microns, creating the ultimate custom lens.
In addition, data gathered from topography can be used in the diagnosis and management of corneal curvature abnormalities such as Keratoconus.
This instrument is also essential for determining if a patient is a candidate for refractive surgery, in addition to managing their pre-operative and post-operative care.
Finally, corneal topography measurements are vital for ortho-keratology; wearing a night time contact lens with the intention of eliminating the need for glassses or contact lenses during the daytime

Advanced Digital Retinal Imaging

As people age, their vision begins to worsen, often due to changes at the back of the eye. Our retinal camera is able to sensitively detect these subtle changes and monitor them over time. Urban Eyewear optometrists now offer digital retinal imaging as part of their standard eye examination. The procedure is painless and quick, keeping patient comfort a priority. The equipment produces a high quality colour digital image of the retina, instantly displaying it on a high-resolution monitor that can be used to detect the earliest stages of retinal change. It ensures that clinical information is comprehensive and facilitates in the proper diagnosis of a wide range of eye disease.
One common condition, that this is important in, is age related macular degeneration, shortened to AMD. This is a condition where the macula (the area used for central vision) deteriorates, subsequently affecting ones central vision, causing things to look blurry, distorted or washed out. This is the leading cause of blindness in those 60 and over. The earlier the detection, the greater the likelihood that the severity of further changes can be minimized.
Glaucoma, retinal detachment, and diabetic retinopathy are some other common eye diseases that the imaging system is helpful in identifying and tracking over time. An additional benefit this system brings, is its ability to e-mail images to doctors for review, when appropriate as well as providing a thorough explanation to the patient themselves.
Latest Breakthrough in Visual Fields Testing
Urban Eyewear optometrists are dedicated to fighting the “thief of sight”-Glaucoma. The symptoms of glaucoma are normally not noticed until quite late in the disease, when it is already too late to repair the damage. Urban Eyewear utilises the latest innovation in field testing equipment for early detection. Our Humphrey Matrix features a frequency doubling technology that provides rapid screening and full threshold test results to quickly and accurately detect the early stages of visual field loss.
This will be another valuable tool to aid us in intervening as early as possible with a treatment to prevent further vision loss as a result of glaucoma. As glaucoma has a strong genetic component, if you have any family history of glaucoma, we recomend you tell your optometrist who can administer this test.
