Types of spectacle frames

Metal frames are made from metal alloys specially produced for this purpose. They have an anti-corrisive coating with hypo-allergenic properties, although this does vary with the quality being offered. They are generally light and comfortable with adjustable nose pads.

Shell frames are now usually made form different types of plastics (they were originally tortoise-shell, hence the name). They tend to be a little heavier in appearance and come in a wider range of colours than metal frames. They generally have a saddle bridge fitting, but some models are a keyhole design.

Carbon frames are made from carbon fibre. These are very lightweight and strong. The finish colour is a surface layer and some poorer quality carbon frames have a reputation for peeling.

Titanium frames are extremely lightweight metal frames which will not corrode. They are expensive but the lightness and anti-corrosive properties make them worthwhile for many patients.

Stainless steel frames are also very strong, lightweight and anti-corrosive. They are more comfortable and durable than standard frames.
