LASER VISION CORRECTION

There are many types of refractive surgery that are available. Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most commonly performed method of correcting refractive errors in vision.

LASIK has advantages over other procedures, including a relative lack of pain afterward and the fact that good vision is usually achieved almost immediately, or at least by the very next day. Shortsightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism can be corrected from the LASIK procedure.

LASIK is performed using an instrument called a microkeratome to create a thin flap of corneal tissue which is then lifted and the laser removes some of the corneal tissue underneath. Then the corneal flap is repositioned covering where the corneal tissue was removed.

Generally it is recomended that your prescription stop changing for approximately two years before undertaking laser surgery. For this reason, and others, it is also preferable to be over the age of twenty. You need to be examined by an ophthalmologist who specialises in laser vision correction to assess your suitability for the procedure. Your Urban Eyewear optometrist can refer you to an eye specialist to get an assessment and conduct your aftercare examinations.
