Visual Hygiene Tips
Today, there are increasing amount of people who are focussing at close range for long periods, such as using the computer and reading. Focussing for extensive periods often lead to stress in the visual system and it may eventually break down.
General tips to follow:
1. Visual rest breaks every half an hour. Examples of rest breaks may
include looking out of the window or going for a quick walk. Rest breaks
will allow your eyes to relax from focusing at close range.
2. Avoid using dim lighting. Your eyes need good lighting in order to focus
properly. Dim lighting may add some extra stress to your visual system
and may cause headaches and eyestrains.
3. If you are reading for extensive period - a knuckle to elbow distance is
recommended for reading. The closer you hold the book towards you, the
more effort your eyes will need to exert to focus properly. Using the
knuckle to elbow rule may minimise the eyestrains and headaches you
are experiencing.
4. Altering your work environment. Take a good look around your work
area. Is your computer situated where sunlight or artificial light are
casting a lot of reflections on the screen? Positioning your computer
somewhere else can help improve your comfort of your eyes. Please talk
to your work supervisor in charge if this is a problem for you.
Sometimes glasses can help your eye relax if you are on the computer or reading the whole day. If you are experiencing symptoms such as
- eyestrains or headaches especially at the computer/reading
- red eyes, especially at the end of the day
- distance vision blurry after focusing on the computer/reading for long periods
-double vision or words moving
